African Cichlid – Tanganyikan – Calvus Cichlid (Altolamprologus calvus) 4-5cm

The Calvus Cichlid is always found in rocky areas, particularly the reef-like structures in Lake Tanganyika.

The Calvus Cichlid can easily be kept in a 60 – 100 Litre aquarium and is not aggressive towards a member of the same species. Like all Tanganyikans, it appreciates hard, clean water. They can be sensitive to abrupt temperature changes, so make sure that your replacement water is consistent with what is in the tank.

The Calvus Cichlid is a specialised predator, feeding on small crustaceans, insect larvae, eggs, fry and young fish on the reef. The laterally compressed body of this fish allows it to penetrate tight crevices and extract their prey hiding within. The large mouth is rapidly opened and the enormous suction produced draws in the prey forcefully.

Fortunately, in the aquarium, they will eat frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp and blood worms. They may also eat prepared foods such as freeze dried krill, quality flake food as well as protein tablets.

Don’t get frustrated if your fish do not grow quickly; this species just doesn’t get big fast!
