Snow White Discus (5cm)
The Snow White Discus, often hailed as the king of the aquarium, is one of the most beautiful freshwater fish available for home aquariums. Larger than most tropical fish, these peaceful creatures can light up any room when displayed under the right lighting.
Discus fish are known for their challenging care requirements but are highly rewarding when maintained correctly. While the Snow White Discus is not entirely white, it comes very close without venturing into the super-premium Albino strains. This stark, patternless white color stands out in a collection that is typically filled with vibrant colors and patterns. They can live up to 15 years, though most typically live around 10 years.
Behavior and Habitat:
Discus fish are peaceful and avoid conflict by using escape and intimidation. In most tanks, they are one of the largest and brightest fish, and their schooling behavior creates a stunning display of patterns across the tank. Although there can be some competition within the shoal, they tend to establish a pecking order. Ensure smaller fish can eat by monitoring them closely.
These fish typically stay in the mid-levels of the tank but will rise to the top and dip to the bottom to forage, dominating all levels of the tank. They prefer free swimming but need the option to stay close to cover such as large driftwood or plants.
Care Requirements:
- Temperature: Discus require higher temperatures than most fish, ideally between 27-31°C, to reduce stress and the risk of illness.
- Water Conditions: The Amazonian water is soft and slightly acidic, with a pH between 6 and 7. Ensure your aquarium water is de-chlorinated and treated to neutralize tap water. The water flow should be weak, which can be achieved using a spray bar or driftwood.
- Substrate: Soft to medium sediment is preferred as Discus forage on the substrate and larger pieces can cause injury.
- Plants: Adding plants like Amazon Sword or Dwarf Hairgrass can provide oxygen and act as a nutrient sink, improving water quality.
Tank Size:
Discus fish need to be in schools of at least 5, with a minimum tank size of 180L. However, they thrive better in larger tanks upwards of 370L, which helps maintain stable water conditions and provides ample space.
Ideal Stocking Ratio:
One Discus fish per 30L is ideal to ensure they have enough space to thrive.
Bring home the elegance and tranquility of Snow White Discus and watch them transform your aquarium into a vibrant, peaceful haven.
